게 하다, 시키다 = Force/Make/Let Smb
안녕하세요 여러분! I’m Junie from KoreanStudyJunkie. In this lesson, we will learn a couple different forms used to say “make someone” or “force someone” and even “let someone” do something. In Korean, they actually don’t differentiate between letting someone do something and forcing someone to do something.
A/V-게 하다
A/V-게 하다 grammar = make someone/something to do/be, cause someone/something to be in the state of A
FORM:
Verb + -게 하다:
보다 —> 보게 하다 (let someone see something)
먹다 —> 먹게 하다 (let someone eat something)
놀다 —> 놀게 하다 (let someone play something)
We’ll actually look at specific structures to make this less confusing
N1이/가 N2을/를 V-게 하다 = N1 make/let N2 happen
선생님께서는 학생들을 10분 동안 쉬게 하셨어요.
The teacher let students rest for 10 minutes.
봄은 꽃들을 피게 한다.
Spring makes flowers bloom.
N1이/가 N2에게 V-게 하다 = N1 make/let N2 do something
엄마는 안나에게 친구들 앞에서 피아노를 치게 하셨어요.
Anna’s mother made her play the piano in front of her friends.
교수님은 학생에게 금요일까지 숙제를 내게 하셨어요.
The professor had the students submit their homework by Friday.
Now the next structure is for ADJECTIVES
N1이/가 N2을/를 A-게 하다 = Cause someone/something to be in a state described by the adjective
마크 씨는 질문을 너무 많이 해서 나를 귀찮게 해요.
Mark annoyed me with all his questions.
요즘 저를 우울하게 하는 일들이 많이 생겼어요.
A lot of things have happened recently to depress me.
A few more examples:
어머니는 아이가 한 시간 동안 게임을 놀게 해요.
The mother lets her child play the game for one hour.
부모님은 제가 밤늦게 못 나가게 하셨어요.
My parents won’t let me outside late at night.
슬픈 영화가 제 마음을 아프게 했어요.
The sad movie broke my heart / made my heart hurt.
시키다 - to make/ let
시키다 as the causative form of 하다.
Meaning you can replace 하다 with 시키다 if a verb ends with 하다.
공부하다 > 공부시키다 = make (someone) study/ to have (someone) study
청소를 하다 > 청소를 시키다 = to make (someone) to the cleaning/ to have (someone do the cleaning)
일을 하다 > 일을 시키다 = to make (someone) work
Add 에게 to the second noun
선생님은 학생들에게 공부시켰어요.
The teacher made the students study. / the teacher had the students study.
선생님이 학생들을 조용히 시켰어.
The teacher made the students be quiet.“
You can also do -게 시키다 (instead of 게 하다).
엄마가 나한테 숙제를 하게 시켰어요.
My mom made me do homework.
그녀는 나를 부끄럽게 시켰어요.
She embarrassed me.
SIDENOTE:
you can also use 시키다 instead of 주문하다 to say “to order”.
커피를 시키다 = to order coffee
치킨을 시키다 = to order chicken
배달을 시키다 = to order delivery
