안녕하세요 여러분! Koreanstudyjunkie입니다. There are plenty of homonyms in Korean and they can be quite confusing to Korean learners! Today, I'll give you a list of the most common ones with example sentences.
팔 = eight / arm
그녀는 그 아이의 팔을 잡았어요
She caught the child by the arm.
나는 팔을 그녀에게 둘렀어
I put an arm around her.
8년은 아주 오랜 시간이죠.
Eight years is way too long.
다리 = bridge / leg
한 사람이 다리를 건너고 있어요
A person is walking across the bridge.
그 다리는 마침내 1971년에 완성되었습니다
The bridge was finally completed in 1971.
그는 다리에 총을 맞았어
He was shot in the leg.
여자가 다리를 꼬고 있다
The woman is crossing her legs.
병 = bottle / disease
이 병을 어떻게 열어야 하죠?
How do I open this bottle?
우리 점심 먹기 전에 샴페인 한 병 합시다, 좋죠?
Let's have a bottle of champagne before lunch, OK?
많은 사람은 그 환자로부터 병이 옮았어요
Many people caught the disease from the patient.
그녀는 병이 나았다.
She was healed of her sickness.
초 = second / candle
1초마다 두 명의 아기가 태어나고 있습니다.
Two babies are born every second.
케이크 한 조각에 초 꽂아 왔어.
A piece of cake with a candle on it.
그는 성냥을 켜서 초에 불을 붙였다.
He struck a match and lit a candle.
새 = new / bird
새 컴퓨터는 값이 매우 비쌀 것 입니다
A new computer would be very expensive.
새 차를 몹시 갖고 싶다.
I badly want a new car.
새가 창문으로 방에 날아들었어
A bird flew into the room through the window.
일찍 일어나는 새가 벌레를 잡는다
It’s the early bird that catches the worm.
사과 = apples / apology
사람들은 다양한 방법으로 사과를 먹는다.
People eat apples in various ways.
사과들이 나무에서 떨어지고 있습니다
Apples are falling from the tree.
사과할게요. 제 진심어린 사과를 받아주시기 바랍니다.
I must apologize. Please accept my sincere apology.
내가 정말 미안하다고 사과를 했죠.
I apologized and said I was really sorry.
배 = boat / stomach
사람들이 배 안에서 점심을 먹고 있다.
People are having lunch in a boat.
배가 아프다
I feel[have] a pain in my stomach.
사과, 오렌지 그리고 배와 같은 과일들도 나무에서 옵니다!
Fruits such as apples, oranges and pears come from trees, too!
풀 = grass / glue
말이 풀을 먹고 있다
The horse is eating the grass.
두 장의 종이를 풀로 맞붙이다.
paste/glue two sheets of paper together
달 = month / moon
다음 달에 LA에 오실지도 모른다고 하셨죠?
Didn't you say you might be in L.A. next month?
달은 지구의 주위를 운행한다.
The moon revolves around the earth.
김 = steam / seaweed
주전자의 물이 끓으면서 김이 났다.
While the kettle boiled, steam came out.
나는 김 맛을 좋아하지 않는다.
I don't like the taste of seaweed.
차 = car / tea
제 차가 주차장에 있습니다
My car is in the parking lot.
요즘 저는 커피 대신 차를 마시고 있어요
These days, I've been drinking tea instead of coffee.
눈 = snow + eye
눈이나 코를 손으로 비비지 마세요.
Don’t rub your eyes or nose.
1월에 눈이 오기 시작했습니다.
It started to snow in January.
의사 = doctor + mind, idea; intention
그는 자라서 의사가 되고 싶어해요.
He wants to be a doctor when he grows up.
의사가 도움이 되었나요?
Was the doctor able to help you?
저는 아직 결혼할 의사가 없습니다
I don't have any intention to get married just yet.
이 문제에 대한 당신의 의사를 내게 말해 주시오
Let me know your mind(opinion) in this matter.
시장 = market + mayor
오는 길에 시장에 잠깐 들렀었어요.
I stopped off at the market on my way over.
시에서는 오는 11월 새로운 시장선거를 할 것이다.
Next November, the city will vote for a new mayor.
개 = dog + counter (for things)
그 개는 맹인을 도와줍니다.
The dog is helping the blind man.
승규는 귤을 좋아해서 자기 혼자 귤 열 개를 다 먹었어
Seunggyu loves tangerines. He ate all ten tangerines by himself.
사탕 한 개 = a piece of candy
여러 개의 가방 = Several bags.
해 = sun + year
오늘은 먹구름이 해를 가려서 한낮에도 깜깜했어
The dark clouds covered the sun today, so it was dark even in the middle of the day.
승규는 해가 바뀌면 스물이 된다.
Seung-gyu turns 20 when the year changes.
맞다 = to be hit + to be correct
A가 맞는 답입니다
"A" is the right answer.
그 선수는 공에 머리를 맞았어
The player got hit on[in] the head with a ball.
열 = 10 + fever
지수는 나이가 열이 될 때까지 할머니 댁에 살았습니다
Jisoo lived at her grandmother's house until she turned 10.
내 동생은 감기에 걸려 몸에서 열이 펄펄 났어
My brother's got a cold. He's got a fever.
나는 영어 공부에 열을 올렸어요
I got myself all fired up/excited about studying English.
그 사람 때문에 정말 열 받았어
He made me mad.
이 유리는 열에 강하다
This glass is heat-resistant.
연기 = delay;postponement/ acting;performance / smoke
회의를 내일로 연기할 수 있을까요?
Can we hold off on the meeting until tomorrow?
그는 12살에 연기를 시작했습니다.
He first started acting when he was 12 years old.
연기 때문에 내 눈에서 눈물이 났어.
The smoke made my eyes water.
선물 = present / stock (finance)
지금 선물을 뜯어 봐도 될까요?
May I open the present now?
나는 선물들을 받고 정말 기뻤어
I was delighted with my presents.
점 = mole / fortune telling / point; dot
(This word also has a few other meanings I didn't mention in this post)
사업이 잘 풀리지 않자 그는 점을 한번 보기로 했습니다.
When the business didn't go well, he decided to see the fortune teller.
어머니는 아들이 시험에서 백 점을 맞아 왔다며 기뻐하셨어요.
My mother was happy that my son had gotten 100 points on the test.
나는 수학 시험에서 100점을 받았어.
I got 100 (percent) on the math exam.
승규는 이마에 큰 점이 나 있어
Seunggyu has a big mole on his forehead.
공항을 떠난 비행기는 곧 조그마한 점처럼 보이더니 저 멀리 사라져 버렸어.
The plane that left the airport soon looked like a small dot and disappeared far away.
지방 = fat / countryside
이 지방은 질 좋은 포도주 생산지로 유명해요
This region is famous for producing excellent wines.
그는 지방에서 고등학교를 졸업하고 서울로 올라왔습니다.
He came up to Seoul after graduating from high school in the provinces.
이 치즈는 비교적 지방이 적어
This cheese is relatively low in fat.
몸 안의 지방을 많이 없애기 위해서는 꾸준한 운동이 필요합니다.
You need to exercise steadily to get rid of a lot of fat in your body.
타다 = ride / burn
(This word has other meanings as well, but I chose to do the most commonly used ones)
뭔가 타는 냄새가 난다
I can smell something burning.
화재로 많은 사람들이 타 죽었어
Many people were burned to death by the fire.
배에는 승객 30명이 타고 있었어요
There were 30 passengers on the boat[ship].
자전거 타는 법을 배우다
learn to ride a bicycle
