기 전에 & ㄴ후에 Lesson | Before and After in Korean

안녕히세요! KoreanStudyJunkie입니다. Back with another beginner grammar lesson. I think people often forget this grammar structure when studying Korean, because It’s not aa common as other beginner grammar but It’s also super useful.

Verb + 기 전에 | Noun + 전에

Usage: Verb + 기 전에 " is used when the speaker wants to express something 'before a certain time or action.’

Examples of 기 전에 :

저녁 먹기 전에 잠깐 가서 좀 씻고 올게요. I’ll just go and freshen up before supper.

아이들에게 저녁 먹기 전에 초콜릿을 너무 많이 먹이지 말아요. Don’t stuff the kids with chocolate before their dinner.

밥 먹기 전에 뭐 했어? What did you do before having food ?

가기 전에 데이터를 재확인해 주시겠어요? Can you recheck the data before you go?

잠자러 가기 전에 물을 많이 마시고나서 일어나면 기분이 나아질 것입니다. Taking in lots of water before you go to sleep will help you wake up feeling better.

공부하기 전에, 그는 방을 깔끔히 치우기로 결정했습니다. Before studying, he decided to tidy it up.

공부하기 전에 휴식 하는게 좋다고 합니다. It is recommended to take a break before studying.

운동 하기 전에 몸을 스트레칭으로 풀어주고요. Stretch your body before exercising.

Examples of 전에 :

퇴사하기 한 달 전에 미리 통지를 해야 한다. You must give one month's notice before leaving the company.

우린 2시간 전에 공항에 도착해야 해. We have to get to the airport two hours before.

1시간 전에 모두 챙겼다고. I was all packed an hour ago.

아니오, 1시간 전에 집에 갔어요. No, he went home an hour ago.

정제 두 알을 식사 전에 물과 함께 복용하라. Take two tablets with water before meals.

그 나라는 10년 전에 독립을 했다. The country gained independence 10 years ago.

보아는 10년 전에 한국에서 데뷔했다. BoA debuted in Korea 10 years ago.

Verb + (으)ㄴ 후에 | Noun + 후에

Usage: Verb + (으)ㄴ 후에 "  is used when the speaker wants to express something ' after a certain time or action. ' the verb stem ends with a consonant then ~은 후에 is added after the verb stem.

• 먹다 - 먹은 후에

the verb stem ends with a vowel then ~ㄴ후에 is added after the verb stem.

• 가다 - 간 후에

Examples of (으)ㄴ 후에:

그는 저녁을 먹은 후에 잠이 드는 버릇이 있었다.

He had a habit of falling asleep after dinner.

내 말을 끝까지 다 들은 후에 무슨 말이든 해.

Hear me out before you say anything.

일단은 제가 군대 가기 전과 군대 간 후에 습관이 하나 바꼈어요.

First of all, my habits changed one thing before and after I joined the military.

생각하는게 산 후에 못 입는 거 아직 있어요.

I think there are still things I can't wear after buying.

우리가 이 집을 산 후에 집값이 많이 떨어지고 있습니다.

Since we bought this house, house prices have come down a lot.

생물학을 공부한 후에 언어학으로 전공을 바꾼 이유가 있으세요?

Why did you change your major to linguistics after studying biology?

Examples of 후에:

내가 운동 후에 좋아진 것을 보여줄게, 이게 전후 비교 사진이야.

I'll show you how I feel after working out, here's a before and after picture.

이 아름다운 하루의 시작 후에, 어린이들은 보통 아빠와 하루를 보냅니다. After this beautiful start of the day, children usually spend the day with their dads.

또 다른 아파트는 한 달 후에 빕니다. Another apartment will be vacated in a month.

나는 2년 후에 은퇴할 생각이다 I'm contemplating retirement in two years.

주인은 2년 후에 계약을 중단하였다. The owner terminated the contract after two years.

수업이 2분 후에 시작돼! Class starts in 2 minutes!
