Korean Abbreviations | 저는 vs 전 나는 vs 난

안녕하세요! It's Koreanstudyjunkie here. What if I told you that many of the words you probably already know have an abbreviated or shortened form?


Korean Abbreviations

There are a ton of abbreviations in the Korean language, It happens even with some of the grammar structures. An abbreviation (Id you don’t know) Is when a word is shortened for the sake of convenience or time. A few of the pronouns in Korean can be abbreviated when paired with certain particles.


저는 ⇒ 전 = I (+ topic marker)

저를 ⇒ 절 > not as common = I (+ object marker)

나는 ⇒ 난 = I (Informal + topic marker)

나를 ⇒ 날 = I (informal + object marker)

너는 ⇒ 넌 = You (Informal + topic marker)

너를 ⇒ 널 = You (Informal + object marker)

우리는 ⇒ 우린 = We (+ topic marker)

FULL LIST:

나의 -> 내 = My (Informal)

저의 -> 제 = My (Polite/Formal)

너의 -> 네 Your (Informal)

이것이 -> 이게 = This (+ subject marker)

그것이 -> 그게 = That (+ subject marker)

저것이 -> 저게 = That over there (+ subject marker)

이것은 -> 이건 = This (+ topic marker)

그것은 -> 그건 = That (+ topic marker)

이것을 -> 이걸 = This (+ object marker)

그것을 -> 그걸 = That (+ object marker)

저것을 -> 저걸 = That over there (+ object marker)

이 아이 -> 얘 = This kid

그 아이 -> 걔 = That kid

저 아이 -> 쟤 = That kid over there

무엇 -> 뭐 = What

무엇을 -> 뭘 = What (+ object marker)

가지다 -> 갖다 = To Have

아니요 -> 아뇨 = No

이야기 -> 얘기 = Talk; Story

조금 -> 좀 = A Little, A Bit

왜냐하면 -> 왜냐면 = Because

그저께 -> 그제 = The Day Before Yesterday
