V-(으)려면 = if you want to do V, if you intend to do V

Usage: It is the shortened form of V-(으)려고 하면, which is used to express a plan or intention to do something in the 1st sentence and the condition to fulfill the plan or intention in the 2nd sentence = if you want/ intend to… then you should...

V-(으)려면.. = If you want to..

The 2nd clause is often ended in suggestive forms such as:

| V-아/어야 해요 = You should Verb, You must Verb

| V-(으)면 돼요 = It‘s good/okay to do Verb

| V-(으)세요 = Please Verb

| N-이/가 필요해요 = Noun is needed, You need Noun

| -는 게 좋아요. = doing X is good

CONJUGATION:

Verb ending in vowel or ㄹ + 려면:

가다 → 가려면 (if you want to go...)

공부하다 → 공부하려면 (if you want to study...)

*살다 → 살려면 (if you want to live...)

Verb ending in consonant + 으려면:

먹다 → 먹으려면 (if you intend to eat...)

Example Sentences:

피아노를 잘하려면 연습을 많이 해야 해요.

➔ If you want to play the piano well, you have to practice a lot.

빨리 부산에 가려면 KTX를 타세요.

➔ If you want to get to Busan quickly, take the KTX.

우리 어머님을 만나려면 주말에 우리 집에 가세요.

➔ If you want to meet my mother, come to our house on the weekend.

주말에 우리 집에 와야 해요.

➔ You have to come to our house on the weekend.

한국말을 잘하려면 매일 한국말로만 이야기하세요.

➔ If you want to speak Korean well, only speak Korean every day.

잊어버리지 않으려면 메모를 쓰세요.

➔ If you don’t want to forget it, write it down.

메모 - note(s), memo

다치지 않으려면 준비 운동을 해야 해요.

➔ If you don’t want to get hurt, you need to warm up.

다치다 - to get injured

학교 도서관에서 책을 받으려면 학생증이 필요해요.

➔ You need your student ID to get books from the school library.

-고 싶으면 vs -(으)려면

Many people wonder the difference between this and 고 싶으면*

고 싶으면 can also be used to say ”if you want..“ but its different

Focus: on your desire or feeling.

Usage: Used when talking about someone’s wish or hope.

Ex: 한국말을 잘하고 싶으면 매일 공부해야 해요.

If you want to speak Korean well, you have to study every day.

Slightly more casual or emotional because it‘s about what you ”want.“

(으)려면 :

Meaning: If you intend to do something“ or ”In order to do something“

Focus: on your action, plan, or purpose.

Usage: Used when talking about the steps or conditions needed to achieve something.

Ex: 한국말을 잘하려면 매일 공부해야 해요.

In order to speak Korean well, you have to study every day.

More logical and neutral, focusing on what ”needs to happen.“

They are both often translated similarly into English, but they feel different to Korean speakers.
