V-적이 있다/없다 = Have/Haven’t Done Before

Today, we’re looking at V-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다. There is also a practice section at the end of the lesson, I’ll put the answers up here:

실패한 적이 있는데 포기한 적이 없어요.

우리 회사는 그 방식을 사용해 본 적이 있습니다.

I also have had those same worries before previously.

제 친구가 그 배우를 실제로 봤어 본 적이 있다고 so like this or also without 봤어?

I’ve taken that medicine before, but it wasn’t really effective.

거기서 눈 온 적이 없어요.

V-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 = have done, have tried

Usage: express the experience of having done or tried something

V-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 = have done

V-(으)ㄴ 적이 없다 = haven’t done

V-(으)ㄴ 일이 있다/없다

expresses the same meaning as

V-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다

but V-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다 is used more often.

Verb ending in vowel:

-ㄴ 적이 있다/없다

본 적이 있다/없다

have seen

탄 적이 있다/없다

have ridden

ㄹ ending verbs:

만든 적이 있다/없다

Remove before conjugating

Verb ending in consonant:

-은 적이 있다/없다

읽은 적이 있다/없다

have read

먹은 적이 있다/없다

have eaten

Example Sentences:

한국 드라마를 본 적이 있어요?

Have you seen Korean drama?

회사에 지각한 적이 없어요.

I have never been late to work

어렸을 때 부산에서 산 적 이 있어요.

I lived in Busan when I was young.

가: 여권을 잃어버린 적이 있어요?

A: Have you lost your passport?

나: 아니요. 여권을 잃어버린 적이 없어요. 그렇지만 우산은 잃어버린 적이 있어요.

B: No, I haven’t . But I have lost my umbrella.

We can combine 아/어 보다 with ㄴ 적이 있다/없다 to create:

아/어 본 적이 있다/없다

V-아/어 본 적이 있다

express the past experience of having tried something = have tried

V-아/어 본 적이 없다

express the experience of not having tried something = haven‘t tried

These grammars are not used for describing things that are often repeated or are everyday occurrences.

Verb + 아/어 본 적이 있다:

사 본 적이 있다

have tried to buy

먹어 본 적이 있다

have tried to eat

공부해 본 적이 있다

have tried to study

만들어 본 적이 있다

have tried to make

들어 본 적이 있다

have tried to listen

Example Sentences:

가: 유럽에 가 본 적이 있어요?

A: Have you ever been to Europe?

나: 네, 한번 가 본 적이 있어요.

B: Yes, I have traveled there once.

한국 음식을 먹어 본 적이 없어요.

I have never tried Korean food.

중국에 와 본 적이 있나요?

Have you been to China before?

한국 노래 불러 본 적 있어요?

Have you tried singing Korean songs before?

사랑해 본 적이 있어요. 너는?

I’ve been in love before. You?

이 화장품을 써 본 적이 없어요.

I have never used this make-up before.

PRACTICE TIME:

Translate each sentence

1.) My friend said they’ve seen that actor in real life.

실제로 - in real life

2.) Our company has tried using that method before.

방식 - method

3.) 나도 예전에 같은 고민을 한 적이 있다.

4.) It’s never snowed there before.

5.) 그 약을 써 본 적이 있는데, 효과가 별로였어.

6.) I’ve failed before, but I’ve never given up.
