뿐이다 vs 뿐만 아니라 = Only vs Not only A but also B

안녕하세요 여러분! KoreanStudyJunkie입니다~ Today, we’re not only going to look at 뿐만 아니라, but also at a component of it - 뿐이다.

뿐이다 = Only, Just

USAGE:

뿐 can be attached directly to a noun to indicate there is nothing other than that noun. You could also translate 뿐 simply to “only” or “just.”

Examples:

너뿐이야.

There’s nothing other than you. / It’s only you.

나를 알아주는 사람은 너뿐이다.

You’re the only one that understands me.

You can also attach -아니라 or -만 아니라 too, in order to give a meaning of “not only…but..”.

It is also possible to describe 뿐 with 이다, but the nuance changes. You are indicating that there is nothing particular or special about the thing describing 뿐.

Ex: 물을 조금 넣었다고 화를 이렇게 많이 내? 그냥 라면일 뿐이야.

I just put a little bit of water in it, why are you so mad? It’s just ramen.
