안녕하세요 리더님! Koreanstudyjunkie에서 Junie입니다. In this lesson, we’ll learn how to use 편이다.

“편이다” literally means “side” or “tendency.” So this grammar means “tend to / kind of / rather / relatively / on the … side.”

You use it to describe something that’s somewhat true, not absolute, like “I’m kind of tall,” “He’s usually busy,” or “It’s pretty cheap.”

FORMS:

V-는 편이다

자주 운동하는 편이에요.

I tend to exercise often.

Adj-은 편이다, ㄴ 편이다

비싼 편이에요.

It’s rather expensive.

N-인 편이다

학생인 편이에요.

I’m kind of a student (sort of).

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

오늘은 따뜻한 편이에요.

→ It’s rather warm today.

저는 일찍 자는 편이에요.

→ I tend to go to bed early.

한국 드라마를 많이 보는 편이에요.

→ I usually watch a lot of Korean dramas.

저는 내성적인 편이에요.

→ I’m rather introverted.

그는 외향적인 편이에요.

→ He’s on the extroverted side.

언니는 요리 잘하는 편이에요.

→ My older sister is pretty good at cooking.

NOTE: Used for soft opinions — not too strong, polite, and natural in conversation.

HOW TO NEGATE 편이다

The negative forms of this expressions are -안 + 편이다 OR 편이 아니다.

Ex:

저는 많이 안 먹는 편이에요

저는 많이 먹는 편이 아니에요.

I tend to not each much.

NOTE: This expression is only used to reference the present or past , not the future

저는 커피를 많이 안 마시는 편이에요.

마시는 편이 아니에요.

I don’t usually drink much coffee.

이 식당은 조용한 편이에요.

This restaurant is on the quiet side.

저는 주말에 집에 있는 편이에요.

I usually stay home on weekends.

A/V/N - past tense (편이었어요)

You use 편이었어요 when talking about the past — meaning “was on the ~ side” or “used to be rather“

Example Sentences:

예전에는 조용한 편이었어요.

I used to be kind of quiet.

작년에는 커피를 많이 마시는 편이었어요.

I tended to drink a lot of coffee last year.

저는 쇼핑을 자주 하는 편이었어요.

I used to shop a lot.

나는 어렸을 때 공부를 잘하는 편이었어요.

I used to be good at studying when I was younger.

학생 때는 운동을 자주 하는 편이었어요.

When I was a student, I tended to work out often.

저는 드라마를 보는 편이 아니에요.

안 보는 편이에요.

I don’t usually watch dramas.

어렸을 때 부모님의 말을 듣는 편이었어요.

When I was young, I used to listen to my parents well.

저는 별로 술을 마시지 않는 편이에요.

I tend to not drink much.

한식은 매운 편이에요.

Korean food tends to be spicy.

그 친구는 말을 많이 하지 않는 편이에요.

That friend usually doesn’t speak much.

그 가게는 비싼 편이었어요.

That store used to be on the expensive side.

제 방이 작은 편이에요

My room is rather small.
