Secondhand Shopping | Korean Short Story

In this lesson, I have a story about a person named 민수 who wanted a new bike and decided to get one secondhand. If you look closely this story repeats a few key words several times to help you learn them easier. This story also uses a mix of upper beginner and low intermediate grammar.

FULL STORY:

민수는 새로운 자전거를 사고 싶었어요. 그래서 인터넷으로 예쁜 자전거를 찾았어요. 그런데 가격이 너무 비쌌어요. 민수는 돈이 별로 없었거든요.

"중고 자전거를 사는 게 어때요?" 친구가 물어봤어요. 민수는 중고 자전거를 사기로 했어요. 하지만 민수는 자전거를 고치는 법을 모르니까 걱정했어요. "고장 나면 어떡하지?"

친구가 말했어요. "내가 고쳐 줄게. 걱정하지 마!" 민수는 시장에 갔어요. 시장에는 싸고 좋은 자전거가 많았어요. 민수는 빨간색 자전거를 골랐어요. 자전거를 살 때 아주머니가 말했어요.

"이 자전거는 튼튼한데 조금 느려요." 민수는 빨리 달리는 것보다 튼튼한 것이 더 좋아서 그 자전거를 샀어요.

집에 와서 자전거를 탔는데 바퀴가 이상했어요. 민수는 바퀴를 고칠 줄 몰랐어요. 친구에게 전화했어요. "도와 줄래요? 바퀴가 고장났어요."

친구는 바로 와서 바퀴를 고쳐 줬어요. "자전거를 고치려면 드라이버가 필요하잖아요!" 친구가 웃으면서 말했어요.

이제 민수는 자전거를 잘 탈 수 있어요. 다음 주에는 친구들과 함께 자전거 여행을 갈 거예요. “같이 한강까지 달리는 게 어때요?" 민수가 물었어요. "좋아! 나도 갈 래!" 친구들이 대답했어요.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Min-su wanted to buy a new bicycle. So he looked for a pretty bicycle on the internet. But the price was too expensive. Min-su didn’t have much money.

“How about buying a used bicycle?” his friend asked. Min-su decided to buy a used bicycle. However, he was worried because he didn’t know how to fix a bicycle. “What if it breaks?”

His friend said, “I’ll fix it for you. Don’t worry!” Min-su went to the market. There were many cheap and good bicycles at the market. Min-su chose a red bicycle. When he bought the bicycle, the lady said,

“This bicycle is sturdy, but a little slow.” Min-su liked something sturdy more than something that goes fast, so he bought that bicycle.

After he came home and rode the bicycle, the wheel seemed strange. Min-su didn’t know how to fix the wheel. He called his friend. “Can you help me? The wheel is broken.”

His friend came right away and fixed the wheel. “You need a screwdriver to fix a bicycle!” his friend said with a laugh.

Now Min-su can ride his bicycle well. Next week he will go on a bicycle trip with his friends. “How about riding together to the Han River?” Min-su asked. “Sounds good! I want to go too!” his friends replied.
