안녕하세요 리더님! I'm Koreanstudyjunkie. I have a list of a few really useful Korean idioms that I found that you can use in daily life.

NUMBER ONE: 정신이 팔리다

Literal Translation: to be distracted,

Meaning: be absorbed in sth; be engrossed (in/with)

Example Sentences:

그는 컴퓨터 게임에 정신이 팔려 내가 떠나는 것도 몰랐어.

He was so absorbed in computer games that he didn't notice I was leaving.

문자 메시지를 보내는 데에 정신이 팔렸어요.

I was so preoccupied with texting.

호기심에 정신이 팔리다.

be devoured by curiosity

저는 TV 보는 데 정신이 팔려 있다

I'm absorbed in watching TV.

요즘 딴데 정신이 팔린 것 같아 보여요.

You seem kind of preoccupied lately.

그녀는 돈 버는 일에만 정신이 팔려 있어.

All she ever thinks about is making money.

NUMBER TWO: 침묵을 지키다

Literal Translation: to protect silence

Meaning: keep [remain] silent; hold sb's tongue; not utter a (single) word

Example Sentences:

다른 사람들이 정신없이 떠들어 대는 중에도 그는 침묵만지켰어요.

He just kept silent while the others were talking wildly.

하지만 그는 자신의 출현을 기다리던 기자들의질문 공세에는 침묵을 지켰어요.

However, he remained silent on questions from a swarm of reporters awaiting his appearance.

일자리를 잃을 것이 두려워, 그는 침묵을 지키려고 애쓰고 있으며, 언론에 아무 말도 하지 않으려고 한다.

Since he is worried about losing his job, he is trying to stay quiet and not say anything to the media.

박물관에서는 침묵을 지켜라.

Keep quiet in the museum.

그들은 그들의 관계에 대해 침묵을 지켰어.

They kept quiet about their relationship

NUMBER THREE: 발목을 잡다

Literal Translation: to grab one's ankle

Meaning: come back to haunt someone; blow up in one's face; backfire

Example Sentences:

나의 어두운 과거가 내 발목을 잡지 않기를 바란다.

I hope that my dark past doesn't come back to haunt me.

시험에서 부정행위를 하려던 조의 계획은 아마도 그의 발목을 잡을 거야.

Joe's plan to cheat on the test is probably going to blow up in his face.

나는 마지막 날에 시험 공부를 할 계획이었는데, 컴퓨터가고장나는 바람에 그 계획은 내 발목을 잡았어.

I planned to study for the test on the last day, but that plan backfired when my computer broke that same night.

그녀는 언젠가는 자신의 과거 문제들이 결국자기 발목을 잡게 될 거라고 두려워했습니다.

She was terrified that one day her past problems would catch up with her.

NUMBER FOUR: 할 말이 없다

Literal Translation: No words to say

Meaning: 1. be at a loss for words

2. What can I say?

Example Sentences:

1). 가장 친한 친구 부부가 이혼한다는 말을 들었을 때 나는할 말이 없었다.

When I heard that my best friends are getting divorced, I was at a loss for words.

그 점에 대해서는 내가 할 말 없군. 난 그것은생각 못 해 봤어.

You’ve got me there. I hadn’t thought of that.
