Hi guys, it's Precious. Today we will learn about the differences between 에게, 한테, and 께, and how to use them.
무슨 차이? Not so fast~
Firstly, let us recap their definitions
에게, 한테, 께 share the same meaning of "to" , whereby it is attached to a noun to indicate the action's target. It refers to the subject that an act has an influence on.
P.S. Take note (or not) that both 에게 and 한테 are not affected by final consonants.
What's the difference then?
에게 and 한테 can be used interchangeably in spoken Korean. However, in written Korean, it is more appropriate to use 에게 instead of 한테.
For lazy peeps, you wont go wrong with 에게, at least for now.
How about 께?
께 is the honorific form of 에게 and 한테. It is usually used on subjects with higher rank or status in the hierarchy/to someone more senior and respectable.
When you use 께, you honor the subject, so the sentence will also change to be honorific.
For example,
I give an apple to my friend.
친구에게 사과를 줘요.
I give an apple to my grandmother.
할머니께 사과를 드려요
I ask Ji Eun (friend) a question.
지은씨한테 질문이 물어봐요.
Shall we ask the teacher about it?
선생님께 여쭤 볼까요?
SUMMARY
Meaning: 에게 = 한테 = 께
에게 used in both spoken and written
한테 used in spoken only
께 used for honorific, for use on elders or someone higher rank. To change sentence accordingly to honorifics.
All not affected by final consonants 받침.
