안녕하세요 리더님~ It's Koreanstudyjunkie here. Today, I'm going to discuss different scenarios in which Koreans may use titles differently than we foreigners have learned.
Similar to in English language, we may refer to someone of the opposite sex with traditionally "feminine” or “masculine” words (dude, bro, sis, girl, man, guys, etc.) other languages like Korean also do this. You don’t need to memorize these scenarios AT ALL!🙅
I confess that i call everybody (man, woman, child, and every one in between dude or bro). Do you guys do this also?
Quoting or Indirect Speech
When recounting what a woman said or how she referred to someone else, a man may naturally use 언니 to maintain the accuracy of the original statement.
Example:
A: 너 오늘 누구랑 만났어?→ Who did you meet today?
B: 지영이가 언니랑 밥 먹었다고 하던데?→ Jiyoung said she had lunch with her 언니.
In this case, the man is quoting Jiyoung’s original wording. Since Jiyoung would naturally refer to her older sister as 언니, the man retains that term to accurately reflect what was said.
Gay Culture or Drag Communities
In Korean gay communities or drag culture, men sometimes use 언니 to refer to each other as a playful or affectionate term, mirroring how women might speak to each other.
Example:
A: 언니, 오늘 너무 예뻐!→ Unnie, you look so pretty today!
B: 고마워! 너도 오늘 진짜 잘 어울려.→ Thanks! You look really good today too.
This reflects the playful and informal use of 언니 as a form of endearment between men in certain subcultures.
Sarcasm or Mocking Tone
A man might call another man 언니 as a joke or sarcastic remark, particularly if the other man is acting in a stereotypically "feminine" way.
This is often playful teasing between friends.
Example:
A: 아휴, 나 너무 피곤해. 좀 도와줘!→ Ah, I’m so tired. Help me out!
B: 어머, 언니 너무 힘들었구나~→ Oh my, unnie, you must be so tired~
The use of 언니 here is playful and sarcastic, mimicking stereotypically feminine speech patterns to tease the other person.
Playfully Flattering or Sweet-Talking a Woman
A man might jokingly call a woman 언니 to flatter her, especially if she looks young or stylish. This usage is flirtatious or playful rather than literal.
Example:
A: 언니, 오늘 너무 예쁘네요. 몇 살이에요?→ Unnie, you look so pretty today. How old are you?
B: 뭐야, 장난해? 나 너보다 두 살 많아!→ What? Are you kidding? I’m two years older than you!
In this case, the man is flattering the woman by implying that she looks youthful enough to be called 언니.
Situations Where Older Women Might Call Younger Men 오빠
Romantic Relationships
In romantic relationships, even if the man is younger, a woman might call him 오빠 to create a sense of intimacy and reinforce traditional dating dynamics where the man is perceived as protective or masculine.
This creates a familiar and affectionate tone, even if it technically disregards the age difference.
Example:
여자: 오빠, 나 배고파. 뭐 먹으러 갈까?→ Oppa, I’m hungry. What should we eat?
남자: 뭐든지 다 사줄게.→ I’ll buy you whatever you want.
→ The woman calls him 오빠 to strengthen the sense of intimacy and endearment, even though she is older.

K-Dramas and Korean pop culture often reinforce the idea that 오빠 is used to create intimacy and affection.
Women might imitate this behavior even if they’re older than the man, because it’s seen as "cute" or romantic.
Example:
A woman might jokingly call a younger male idol 오빠 even though she’s older because it’s normalized in fan culture.
Wanting to Feel Youthful
A woman might use 오빠 to feel more youthful herself, as calling someone 오빠 aligns her more with the role of a younger girlfriend rather than an older figure.
Example:
여자: 오빠, 우리 놀이공원 갈래?→ Oppa, do you want to go to the amusement park?
→ The woman may want to feel young and playful by adopting the younger-girlfriend tone.
Deliberate Power Shift
Sometimes using 오빠 can reflect an intentional power shift where the woman gives emotional control or leadership to the younger man.
This reinforces the idea that the man is dependable or authoritative despite the age gap.
Example:
여자: 오빠, 이거 어떻게 해야 돼?→ Oppa, how should I do this?
남자: 내가 해줄게. 걱정 마.→ I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry.
→ The woman voluntarily positions herself in a more dependent role by using 오빠.
Other Situations Where People May Call Someone Differently Than Their Usual Title
Using 언니 or 누나 for a Younger Woman
A younger woman might call an older woman 언니 or 누나 even if they are not biologically related, especially to express closeness and emotional connection.
Similarly, a younger man might call a younger woman 누나 as a playful or teasing gesture.
Example:
남자: 누나, 나 배고파. 밥 사줘!→ Nuna, I’m hungry. Buy me food!
Using Oppa or Nuna in Fan Culture
Fans of male and female idols often refer to them as 오빠 or 누나 even if they are not younger or older. This creates a feeling of personal connection and affection.
Example:
팬: 오빠 너무 잘생겼어요!→ Oppa, you’re so handsome!
Using 형 or 오빠 Among Gay Friends/Couples
In LGBTQ+ communities, men might refer to each other as 형 or 오빠 depending on the tone they want to create. I've seen many male gay couples use 오빠 when referring to their significant other.
Example:
남자: 오빠, 오늘 옷 너무 멋져!→ Oppa, your outfit looks amazing today!
Using Family Titles Like 엄마 (Mom) or 아빠 (Dad)
Friends sometimes jokingly call each other 엄마 or 아빠 to reflect nurturing or protective behavior.
A close friend who cooks and takes care of the group might be called 엄마 as a playful nickname.
Example:
친구: 야, 엄마가 밥 해줄까?→ Hey, should mom (meaning the friend) cook for us?
Using Hyung or Oppa Between Close Female Friends
Close female friends sometimes jokingly call each other 형 or 오빠 for fun or to express closeness. This is usually done in a humorous or exaggerated manner.
Example:
여자: 야, 오빠라고 불러 봐.→ Hey, call me oppa.
친구: 왜? 너 오빠 아니잖아!→ Why? You’re not an oppa!
FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: Keep in mind while you are exposing yourself to more and more Korean, these kinds of scenarios will appear. You don’t have to panic or question everything you know about the Korean language, but rather remember the culture that very heavily influences Korean language. Simply, take a note of it and move on.
