The grammar 자마자 means “as soon as” or “right after.”

It is used when one action happens immediately after another action finishes.

Verb + 자마자 = as soon as / right after

verb stem + 자마자 + result action

Example Sentences:

집에 오자마자 잤어요.

I slept as soon as I got home.

문을 열자마자 고양이가 들어왔어요.

As soon as I opened the door, the cat came in.

학교에 가자마자 친구를 만나요.

I meet my friend as soon as I go to school.

집에 오자마자 씻어요.

I shower as soon as I get home.

전화를 받자마자 나갔어요.

I went out right after answering the phone.

NOTE: You can’t add -았/었 before 자마자! The last verb expresses the tense of the whole sentences.

Past tense sentences are used a lot in story telling.

시험이 끝나자마자 여행을 갔어요.

I went on a trip right after the exam ended.

보자마자 알았어요.

I knew it the moment I saw it.

듣자마자 놀랐어요.

수업이 끝나자마자 나왔어요.
