마다 Lesson | How to say “each..” and “every” in Korean

What is 매 in Korean?

매 means “every”, just like 마다, but it is mainly used in fixed expressions and formal/time-based phrases.

Unlike 마다, you usually don’t attach 매 directly to many nouns in casual speech—it appears in common set patterns.

매일 vs 날마다 (very important comparison)

매일 = every day (most natural)

저는 매일 공부해요.

I study every day.

날마다 = every day (emphasized / more poetic)

날마다 같은 일을 해요.

I do the same thing every day.

In real life:

매일 = more common

날마다 = more expressive

Basic meaning of

마다 = every / each / all of

It shows that something applies to all items in a group individually.

Time expressions with 마다 (very common)

날마다 한국어를 공부해요.

주마다 = every week

주마다 친구를 만나요.

I meet my friend every week.

달마다 = every month

달마다 돈을 저축해요.

I save money every month.

해마다 = every year

해마다 여행을 가요.

I travel every year.

People / things with 마다

사람마다 = each person

사람마다 생각이 달라요.

Each person has different opinions.

Each student has different ability.

Each shop has different prices.

Take this medicine every 6 hours.

The bus usually comes every 3 minutes during rush hour, so It’ll be back soon.

There’s another pre-fix fhat often gets added to time - acting in a similar matter to 마다.

Common “매 + time word” patterns

매주 = every week

매주 친구를 만나요.

I meet my friend every week.

매주 수요일은 정기 휴일입니다.

We close the shop every Wednesday.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Koreans almost always prefer 매 + time words:

매일 (NOT “하루마다” in most cases)

매주 - every week

매달 - every month

매년 - every year

These are considered more “natural” than:

주마다

달마다

해마다
