안녕하세요 여러분! Welcome to or welcome back to KoreanStudyJunkie.

These four words are often translated as "embarrassed," but they describe different feelings and situations.

쪽팔리다

Meaning

A very colloquial, casual expression meaning:

  • To feel embarrassed

  • To lose face

  • To feel stupid in front of others

  • To feel your reputation or image has been damaged

Often used when you look foolish publicly.

Nuance

People saw me. I look ridiculous. More ashamed about the fact you were seen (not necessarily that the event happened itself).

More about social image than internal shame.

Examples

친구들 앞에서 넘어져서 진짜 쪽팔렸어요.

I fell in front of my friends and it was so embarrassing.

시험에서 20점을 받아서 쪽팔렸어요.

창피하다

Meaning

Nuance

More neutral and standard than 쪽팔리다.

Can be used by almost anyone in almost any situation.

Examples

부끄럽다

Meaning

Can mean:

  • shy

  • bashful

  • embarrassed

  • ashamed

  • feeling guilty

This word has the widest range.

Nuance

More internal and emotional.

Sometimes nobody else even knows what happened.

Can also describe modesty.

당황스럽다

Meaning

To be flustered, caught off guard, confused, or awkward because of an unexpected situation.

Nuance

This is NOT necessarily embarrassment.

The core idea is:

"I didn't know how to react."

Examples

I was caught off guard when they suddenly called my name.
