휴가 vs 방학 | Holiday /Vacation in Korean

안녕하세요 리더님! Koreanstudyjunkie에서 Junie입니다~

A couple of times me and my 1:1 students have ended up feeling a bit confused about whether to use 휴가 or 방학 for talking about “vacation/holiday”. I decided to do a deep dive!

I HAVE A QUESTION..

Tired of boring textbooks? Let’s learn real, natural Korean!

Every week, I create a lesson just for YOU based on what you want + what you need to improve

(No textbooks—everything is fully personalized!)

What you’ll get:

  • A custom lesson each week (video or PDF + practice)

  • Focus on ANY skill (speaking, grammar, reading, listening, etc.)

  • Built-in review so you actually remember what you learn

  • Detailed corrections + feedback FROM me

It’s flexible, personalized, and designed to actually help you improve— at your own pace ;)

These are great for those who need a bit of structure and/or people who are very busy and don’t have much time to build their own study routine.

The price is about $12 per lesson and the cost is monthly - $48/mo. This cost encompasses the time it takes to create a fully personalized lessons (4-5 per month), built-in practice + review, and corrections + feedback from me.

Many Korean learners see 휴가 and 방학 and assume they mean the same thing: “vacation.”

But in Korean, they’re used in very different situations.

휴가 – time off work (vacation / leave)

휴가 is used when someone takes time off from work.

Used by:

  • Employees

  • Adults working jobs

  • Military service members

Example sentences:

다음 주에 휴가를 써요.

I’m taking vacation next week.

회사에서 휴가를 받았어요.

I got time off from work.

여름 휴가로 제주도에 가요.

I’m going to Jeju for summer vacation.

Key idea:

  • Work-based time off

  • Can be short or long

  • Often “annual leave” or “holiday break”

방학 – school vacation (student break)

방학 is used when students have a break from school.

Used by:

  • Elementary / middle / high school students

  • University students

Example sentences:

겨울 방학이에요.

It’s winter break.

방학 동안 아르바이트를 해요.

I work part-time during vacation.

방학 때 여행을 가고 싶어요.

I want to travel during break.

Key idea:

  • School-based vacation

  • Usually fixed seasons (summer/winter/etc.)

  • Longer break periods
