Going Grocery Shopping in Korea: A Dialogue for Beginners


안녕하세요 리더님! In this lesson, I’ll be introducing a beginner level dialogue about shopping for groceries in Korea. Under each line in the dialogue, I have provided a small vocabulary list to help you as you read. At the end there is an English translation if you’d like to check your understanding.



FULL DIALOGUE:


직원: 어서 오세요! 무엇을 찾으세요?


Vocab:

어서 오세요 - welcome

무엇 - what

찾다 - find, look for


손님: 안녕하세요. 사과 있어요?


Vocab:

안녕하세요 - hello

사과 - apple

있다 - to be, have


직원: 네, 사과는 여기 있습니다.


Vocab:

네 - Yes

여기 - Here

있다 - Is



손님: 이거 얼마예요?


Vocab:

이거 - This (also written as 이것)

얼마 - How much (money)


직원: 한 개에 2,000원입니다. 지금 할인하고 있어서 1,500원이에요.


Vocab:

하나 - 1

한 개 - 1 (thing)

개 - a counter used for general, everyday items

이천 - 2,000

원 - Won

지금 - Now

할인하다 - to be discounted

천 오백 - 1,500




손님: 좋아요! 사과 세 개 주세요.


Vocab:

좋아요 - good, okay

셋 - 3

세 개 - 3 (things)

주다 - to give

주세요 - please give me

세요 - please do..



직원: 네, 알겠습니다. 다른 것도 필요하세요?


Vocab:

알겠습니다 - Okay, got it, understood

다른 것 - Another thing, a different thing, something else

도 - Too, Also (particle)

필요하다 - to need

세요? - used to make a question polite (doesn’t change the meaning)


손님: 네, 바나나하고 계란도 사고 싶어요.


Vocab:

바나나 - banana

계란 - eggs

하고 - and

바나나하고 계란 - banana and eggs

도 - too, also

사다 - to buy

사고 싶어요 - want to buy

고 싶다 - to want to do..



직원: 바나나는 저쪽에 있고, 계란은 냉장 코너에 있습니다.


Vocab:

저쪽 - That direction

고 - And

냉장 - Refrigeration

코너 - Corner, section



손님: 감사합니다. 우유는 어디에 있어요?


Vocab:

감사합니다 - Thank you (formal)

우유 - Milk

어디 - Where

-에 - in, at, on, to (location marker)


직원: 우유는 계란 옆에 있습니다.


Vocab:

옆 - Next to, beside



손님: 좋아요! 그럼 우유 한 개랑 쌀도 주세요.


Vocab:

좋다 - Good, okay

그럼 - Then, in that case

쌀 - Rice (uncooked)

-도 - Too, also (particle)

주세요 - Please give


직원: 쌀은 몇 킬로그램짜리로 드릴까요?


Vocab:

몇 - How many

킬로그램 - Kilogram

-짜리 - A suffix used to mean "something of such a number or amount" or "something of such a value."

드리다 - To give (honorific)

ㄹ까요? - should i..?, shall we..? (used to ask for opinions)


손님: 5kg짜리 주세요.


Vocab:

오 - 5 (five in Sino Numbers)


직원: 알겠습니다. 계산 도와드릴까요?


Vocab:

계산 - Paying

도외드릴까요? - May i help you..?, Can i help you..?


손님: 네, 감사합니다.


직원: 감사합니다! 좋은 하루 보내세요!


Vocab:

하루 - Day

보내다 - To spend

좋은 하루 - A good day

좋은 하루 보내세요 - Have a good day!

Employee: It’s 2,000 won per apple. Right now, there’s a discount, so it’s 1,500 won.


Customer: Great! Please give me three apples.


Employee: Sure. Do you need anything else?


Customer: Yes, I also want to buy bananas and eggs.


Employee: The bananas are over there, and the eggs are in the refrigerated section.


Customer: Thank you. Where is the milk?


Employee: The milk is next to the eggs.


Customer: Okay! Then, I’ll also take one bottle of milk and some rice.


Employee: What size of rice would you like?


Customer: Please give me a 5kg bag.


Employee: Got it. Would you like me to help you check out?


Customer: Yes, thank you.
