V-(으)라고, 지 말라고 = He/She Said Do | Quoting Commands

Lesson on quoting statements:
Today, we’re learning how to quote COMMANDS in Korean. Aka:
(으)세요, 지 마세요, (으) 십시오, 지 마십시오, 아/어 주세요, etc.
There are 4 forms, we’ll look at today:
(으)라고
지 말라고
아/어 달라고
아/어 주라고
V- (으)라고 하다 = told, asked
Usage: quoting a request or command indirectly. It can also be used to reconvey your own words.
So basically citing what someone said, commanded, or requested
CONJUGATION:
V + -(으)라고 하다 = told, asked
Vowel ending - 라고
가다 —> 가라고 하다
= told to go
Consonant ending - 으라고
입다 —> 입으라고 하다
= told to wear
Irregulars
ㄹ irregular verbs:
Verbs ending with ㄹ, just add 라고
*놀다 —> 놀라고 하다
= told to play
ㄷ irregular verbs:
*걷다 -> 걸으라고 하다
= told to walk
V + 지 말라고 하다 = told (someone) not to (do)
CONJUGATION:
Just attach the verb stem and -지
가다 —> 가지 말라고 하다
= said not to go, told you don’t go
입다 —> 입지 말라고 하다
= told you not to wear
놀다 —> 놀지 말라고 하다
= told you not to play
EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
나: 여기 앉으세요.
—> 제가 여기 앉으라고 했어요.
I told you to sit here.
나: 수지 씨, 전화하세요.
—> 제가 수지한테 전화하라고 했어요.
I told Suzy to make a call.
누구: 여기에 주차하지 마세요.
—> 여기에 주차하지 말라고 했어요.
He told us not to park car here.
엄마 : 밥 먹어.
—> 엄마가 밥 먹으라고 했어요.
Mother told her child to eat.
선생님: 공부 열심히 하세요.
—> 선생님이 공부 열심히 하라고 했어요.
The teacher told her students to study hard.
아빠 : 술 마시지 마.
—> 아빠가 술 마시지 말라고 했어요.
Dad told me to not drink alcohol.
V-아/어/여 달라고 하다
Usage: used when the speaker is making the request directly to the listener.
(speaker -> listener -> speaker).
Speaker asks the listener to do something for them
Original form: 아/어/해 주세요
Example Sentences:
토니: 물을 주세요. —> 나 —> 토니 =
토니 씨는 물을 달라고 했어요.
Tony asked (me) to bring him some water.
수지: 전화해 주세요. —>나 —> 수지
수지 씨가 전화해 달라고 했어요.
Suzy told (me) to call her back.
나: 숙제 도와 주세요. —>친구 —> 나
저는 친구한테 숙제 도와 달라고 했어요.
I asked my friend to help me with my homework.
V-아/어/여 주라고 하다
Usage: used when the speaker is asking the listener to help the 3rd party.
(speaker -> listener -> someone else).
Speaker asks the listener to do something for someone else
Example Sentences:
수지: 토니 씨에게 이 물을 주세요. —> 나 —> 토니
수지 씨는 토니 씨에게 이 물을 주라고 했어요.
Suzy asked me to give this cup of water to Tony.
선생님: 수지한테 숙제 도와 주세요. —> 나 —> 수지
선생님이 수지한테 숙제 도와 주라고 했어요.
The teacher asked me to help Suzy with her homework.
PRACTICE SECTION:
Translate/complete each sentence using the correct form

Mom told me not to talk on the phone late at night.

선배가 후배들에게 열심히..
The senior told the juniors to study hard.
3). My friend told me to definitely (꼭) come to the party.
4). Dad told me not to get into a stranger’s car
모르는 사람 - stranger, person you don‘t know
6). My sister asked me to look for her keys (열쇠).
7). My younger sibling asked Mom to make a delicious snack for them.
8).) My friend told me to buy a present for the teacher.
