어렵다 is used for situations that are mentally difficult.

힘들다 is used for situations that are physically difficult.

어렵다

Meaning: Difficult

Used when something requires skill, knowledge, or effort because it's complex.

Example Sentences:

한국어 문법은 어려워요.

Korean grammar is difficult.

이 문제는 너무 어려워요.

This question is very difficult.

운전 배우기가 어려워요.

Learning to drive is difficult.

그 책은 어려워서 이해가 안 돼요.

That book is difficult, so I can't understand it.

힘들다

Meaning: Hard, Tiring, Exhausting

Used when something drains you physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Example Sentences:

오늘 일이 너무 힘들었어요.

Work was really exhausting today.

요즘 공부하느라 힘들어요.

I'm having a hard time because of studying these days.

계단을 열 층까지 올라가서 힘들어요.

I'm tired because I climbed ten floors of stairs.

혼자 아이를 키우는 건 힘들어요.

Raising a child alone is hard.

COMPARING BOTH

Sometimes both are possible

한국어 공부는 어려워요.

Korean is difficult.

Focus on complexity.

한국어 공부는 힘들어요.

Studying Korean is hard.

Focus on your struggle or effort.

시험이 어려웠어요.

The exam was difficult.

시험이 힘들었어요.

The exam was exhausting/stressful.

Maybe it was long, stressful, or mentally draining.

A useful comparison

Imagine you're climbing a mountain.

산이 어려워요.

The route is technically difficult.

산이 힘들어요.

The climb is exhausting.

Both can be true:

이 산은 어렵고 힘들어요.

This mountain is difficult and exhausting.

Common Korean usage

Koreans often say 힘들다 when talking about life situations:

회사 생활이 힘들어요.

Working life is hard.

요즘 많이 힘들어요.

Things have been tough lately.

Even when something is objectively difficult, if the speaker wants to emphasize their personal struggle, they'll often choose 힘들다 rather than 어렵다.
